Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (kg/m²). It's a quick screen for whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height.
What are the healthy BMI ranges?
WHO: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight, 30+ obese. India's ICMR uses lower Asian-Indian cut-offs — overweight at 23+ and obese at 25+ — because cardiometabolic risk rises earlier in South Asians.
Is BMI reliable?
It's a rough screen, not a diagnosis. BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so very muscular people read 'high' and it ignores fat distribution. Use it as a starting signal alongside waist measurement and how you feel.
